CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:
Keith J. Hampton's Abstract Techniques Class for Adults
HOW DID YOU DO THAT?
I often have art lovers and other artists ask me "How did you do that?" when looking at my paintings. Unless you were actually there during the process, it would be difficult to figure it out just from looking at the surface. And most of the time, I don't tell anyone!
But if you take my class, I will share them with you. My Abstract Techniques class is a great opportunity to learn many techniques that are simply not taught anywhere else. I have developed most these techniques over the last 20 years, experimenting with acrylic paint to find a wealth of possibiities. These techniques are not in books and you won't learn them in art school. But they are proven to help inspire you and help boost your creativity.
TECHNIQUES EXPLORED:
Many of the techniques I will teach are immediately successful and very easy for nearly ANYONE. This is something which other art courses would normally take a student very slowly into, over the span of several weeks. In this course, you will begin creating works in the first class! And you will learn a new technique every single week! That's 8 different ways of painting within 8 weeks. Very few courses offer this intensive type of learning.
Do you know what "applied transfer of paint" is? Have you ever "pulled paint"? Do you understand how sanding a painting will bring out effects that other paintings can't mimic? Have you ever tried "blind painting"? Have you ever used foil to paint with? Have you ever torn up a painting and used it again to create something new and better?
All of these styles of painting (and more) will be covered.
We'll also cover what makes a great painting:
• balance
• color
• harmony/disharmony
• negative space/positive space
• texture
• various media
FEEDBACK
One of the most frustrating things for any student is to leave a classroom wondering what just happened. This has happened to me, so I know it can make a course something to dread because you don't feel confident about the previous week's lesson. In this course, feedback is constantly stressed. I want to make sure you "get" what I'm teaching, so I am always checking in to make sure.
What I DON'T Teach:
Of course, my lessons do not teach someone how to be an artist. This is something that you must have a tiny bit of naturally, some kind of natural gift that is within. I won't teach you how to draw or even how to create a landscape or still life. That is something you can learn in a traditional painting or drawing class at the Carmel Academy if you choose with either Magdalena, Mary Johnston or another instructor.
However, if you have even the most modest amount of art talent, this course can help put that talent into overdrive. My techniques are extremely inspirational and are proven to help show you new ways of thinking about art and will help you create images you see in your head but can't seem to realize on canvas. I know that by the time the first class is over, you will be racing home to try things on your own.
ALLERGIES?
One important thing to know is how allergy-friendly my class is. We don't use any spray paint and we don't use any toxic materials whatsoever. All of what I teach has been developed to be safe in part due to my own allergies.
